This morning, after breakfast mum decided she would make an apple pie for dinner tonight so sent me to the fridge in the out house to go and fetch some in so that I could be peeling them. When I started to take some from the shelves I noticed that a lot of them were going brown. So when back inside I went and told her. She went and had a look for herself and decided that something needed to be done with them quickly while there were still some left for using. So we went through them all, picking out the bad ones and took the rest in the house. She decided the best thing to do was to make pies and freeze them. So we have spend most of the day making apple pies. I did the peeling and cutting up while mum was making the pastry and pies. We made eleven full sized ones in total plus a small one with what was left over.
While we were making the small pie I asked if I could take to Rob the turnip guy down at the stables.
"You'd be okay about doing that would you," Mum asked.
I looked at her because it seemed a strange thing to ask, but the answer wasn't in her face so I asked, "Is there some reason why I shouldn't be?"
"No not that I know of but I've heard the girls down there give him a wide birth as they think he's strange."
"Is that why they give me a wide birth?" I asked.
"Don't be daft, they just don't know you that's all. Just give them time."
"Anyway if you're alright with it then by all means make him a pie, I'm sure he will appreciate it," and added that she wasn't going to discourage me from having such kind thoughts.
"Your uncle Ken was saying some really nice things about you yesterday to adnd it made your dad really proud of you."
"He never said anything, not that he needs to of course, I didn't do it for praise, I just liked doing it," I said.
Anyway when the pie was cooked we let it cool before mum ran me down the road in the car. She let me take the pie to him while she went to look at the horses.
He was in his garden cutting back some bushes and as soon as he saw me a smile spread across his face.
"Hello lass, what have I done to deserve this pleasure?" He asked.
I showed him the pie and told him the story of what happened with the apples and said that we made this for you as you were so kind as to give us the turnip the other day. We chatted a bit before I said I had to go as mum was probably waiting for me. He thanked me very much and said I'd made his day and that he would be thinking of me hen he had the pie for his dinner tonight.
It's nice to make someone happy like that, more people should try it.
